August retail inflation spikes to 20-month high of 4.82%
15-Sep-2026

Retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to a 20-month high of 4.82% in August due to a broad-based rise in prices. However, the spike stemmed primarily from elevated prices of several food items including edible oils and sugar, according to data released by the statistics ministry on Monday. With the inflation outlook turning slightly more vulnerable due to the recent bout of volatility in prices of crude oil and assorted metals, expectations have risen that the Reserve Bank of India‘s Monetary Policy Committee will raise interest rates as soon as October.
