Why is Microsoft borrowing $25 billion after offering buyouts to 60,000 employees?
03-Nov-2026

Microsoft is turning to debt markets to raise $25 billion as its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions push up infrastructure costs, just days after offering voluntary exit packages to around 60,000 employees across India, the US, Canada and the UK. The timing of the two moves has drawn attention as the technology giant prepares for a massive increase in spending on AI and cloud computing infrastructure. The company plans to use the money for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure. Microsoft has projected capital expenditure of approximately $175 billion for 2026 as it races to expand its data centre capacity and meet growing demand for AI services.
