Why the PSU bank run may hit a wall: The liquidity metric that tells the real story
02-Sep-2026

A look at headline banking metrics suggests that India's Public Sector Banks (PSBs) hold an enviable advantage over their private peers. With a system-wide credit expansion running at a multi-year high of ~20% year-on-year (or ~18% adjusted figure), state-owned lenders appear to have substantial balance sheet headroom. Their headline Loan-to-Deposit Ratio (LDR) stood at 81.3% in the June 2026 quarter (1QFY27), well below the 90.5% registered by Private Sector Banks (PVBs). On the surface, this roughly 9-percentage-point buffer implies that public lenders have ample capacity to fund fresh loans without straining their retail deposit bases. A closer examination of regulatory liquidity metrics, however, reveals a structural bottleneck that challenges this growth narrative.
