US-based Spirit Airlines becomes industry’s first casualty of Iran war; over 17,000 jobs at stake
04-May-2026

Spirit Airlines, the bankrupt discount carrier, ceased operations on Saturday (May 2), becoming the industry’s first casualty linked to the Iran war, after failing to secure creditor support for a US government bailout plan. The airlines has gone out of business after 34 years in the aviation sector. It can be seen that the collapse of the first carrier due to a doubling in jet fuel prices during the two-month-old Iran war will cost thousands of jobs. The airline faces another blow as the stakes are high, with more than 17,000 employees set to lose their jobs. This comes as a huge blow to US President Donald Trump, who had earlier proposed $500 million to save Spirit despite opposition from some of his closest advisers and many Republicans in Congress.
