US President Donald Trump began the war with Iran under Operation Epic Fury with maximalist rhetoric, demanding Tehran’s “unconditional surrender” and promising crushing military force. Barely 10 days later, however, Trump is striking a noticeably different tone. He now says the war is “very complete, pretty much” and suggests it could end “very soon.” The shift has triggered intense debate among analysts and in financial markets alike. Oil prices, which had surged to nearly $120 a barrel amid fears of a prolonged disruption in Middle Eastern energy supplies due to disruption of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, fell sharply after Trump’s comments. But the sudden change in tone has also revived a familiar phrase among Trump watchers: TACO, “Trump Always Chickens Out.”
