FTAs to cover 71% of India’s exports as US, EU deals expand trade footprint
06-Feb-2026

India’s expanding network of free trade agreements (FTAs) has significantly reshaped the country’s external trade profile over the past two decades. With the US now joining India’s FTA partners alongside the European Union, nearly 71 percent of India’s exports are expected to fall under trade agreements in 2026, a sharp rise from about 22 percent in 2019 and just 11 percent in 2004. The transformation becomes clearer when viewed over time. In 2004, FTAs accounted for only around 8.2 percent of India’s total trade. This share rose gradually to about 21 percent by 2019 before accelerating after 2024, when India concluded or advanced agreements with several advanced economies, including the UK, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.
