The new Consumer Price Index (CPI) series may assign a 36-38 percent weight to the "food and beverages" group, which is likely to curb the impact of volatility in food prices on the headline retail inflation print, a senior government official told Moneycontrol. In the present CPI series, the segment carries a weight of 45.9 percent. "The weights are not yet final, but it’s likely to be within this range," the official said. "The source of assigning weights is the consumer expenditure survey but the actual weights in the CPI series is not the same as what the survey shows," the person added.
