US faces population decline by 2033, record-high debt, and slower growth without immigration, CBO warns
28-Mar-2025

The US is expected to see its population begin shrinking in 2033 unless immigration sustains growth, according to a new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released on Thursday. The estimate moves up the projected threshold by seven years compared to last year’s forecast, which had set the date at 2040. According to the CBO’s long-term budget outlook, annual deaths in the US will surpass births by 2033, making net immigration the primary driver of population growth.
