India-US trade: Balancing flexibility with firmness

Every week, the Trump administration is asking India for a fresh set of concessions, based on a new set of accusatory logic. If you look sequentially at this journey over the last few months, a pattern emerges: (partial) fulfilment of one set of issues leads to another set being put on the table.
Initially, the US wanted India to reduce tariffs on imported motorcycles, specifically Harley-Davidson. Recently, before Narendra Modi's visit to the US, duties on these bikes were reduced. But India was also pressured to reduce taxes and tariffs on American whisky, further cementing the trend that the US is interested in comprehensive access to the Indian market across all fronts, and on a non-reciprocal basis.
