Repeat of last month’s strong FII flows unlikely: Arvind Sanger
18-Aug-2022

What do you think about the FOMC minutes? We do not know what the next rate hike is going to be but we do know there will be one. Yes I think it is a 50-50; whether it will be 50 basis points or 75 basis points but clearly not only is the next rate hike coming but I believe there are three rate hikes coming between now and year end. So, unless the data turns sharply lower, they will keep going. They may not go at as fast a pace for the rest of the year. They may go for a 50 bps hike, they may go for 25 bps hike over the next few meetings but there are multiple rate hikes coming. I do not think the Fed is prepared to declare victory just because inflation came down from 9.1% to 8.5%. They realise that the employment numbers continue to be very strong and therefore the inflationary forces are at work other than the finished goods where some supply chain de- bottlenecks, some fall in demand are helping. But there are other elements which are a little more stubborn and it is way too early to start declaring victory.
